The salvage master who righted the capsized Costa Concordia cruise
liner was hailed as a hero today after a successful 19-hour operation.
Nick Sloane, 52, a South African from the US company Titan salvage, managed the entire process by remote control from a barge moored near the bow of the capsized vessel at the head of an 11-man team who were immediately dubbed “The Magnificent Eleven”.
The success of the operation was signalled by the sounding of ship’s horns at 4.08 am.
