Chinese doctor stabbed to death in latest hospital attack
BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese man unhappy with the results of an operation on his nose stabbed a doctor to death and wounded two others on Friday, state media reported, in at least the third such attack in a week in which China promised to improve hospital security.
The 33-year-old man, surnamed Lian, carried out the attack at a hospital in Wenling city in the wealthy eastern province of Zhejiang, Xinhua news agency reported.
Lian had gone to the ear, nose and throat department looking for the doctor who treated him, but he was not there. He pulled out a knife and stabbed the head of the department instead, Xinhua said.
Lian also stabbed two other doctors before he was restrained by security guards, it added, without providing further details.
Earlier in the week, a man killed himself by jumping from a hospital building after stabbing a doctor six times in northeastern Liaoning province after a disagreement over complications from surgery on his arm.
Two doctors were also beaten up by angry family members of a patient who died in hospital in southern China's Guangdong province.
China spent 719.9 billion yuan ($120 billion) on health care last year, a 12 percent increase from the previous year, in recognition of official concern about a key driver of social resentment.
But hospitals are frequently overwhelmed with patients, and doctors are badly paid leading to corruption and a suspicion that staff are more interested in making money by prescribing unnecessary drugs and treatment than tending the sick.
The government this year has launched a sweeping crackdown on medical corruption, targeting foreign drug makers in particular.
Many other Chinese are simply unable to afford health care at all, despite government efforts to provide a basic safety net, which has also prompted attacks in the past.
The Health Ministry this week announced plans to provide better security at hospitals, saying that last year seven people were killed and 28 injured in assaults on medical staff.
Ministry data shows that violent attacks directed at doctors and other health care workers in the form of beatings, threats, kidnappings, verbal abuse and murder reached 17,243 cases in 2010, the latest year for which such figures are available.

NIS Recruitment: Reps Cannot Stop N1,000 On-Line Application Fee – Interior Minister

Abba Moro

Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro yesterday dismissed the directive by the House of Representatives that the N1,000 on-line application fee charged those seeking employment in the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) be refunded to the applicants, insisting that it is impossible.
The House of Representatives Committee on Public Service Matters on Wednesday had while launching an investigative hearing on alleged employment rackets in the public service, directed the Ministry of Interior to cancel the fee.
But Mr. Moro, in his response to the directive, said the fee subsisted adding that he was not bothered by the opposition to the fee by the lawmakers because he was doing the right thing.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Ministerial Committee on Para-military Village Housing Scheme Development project Nationwide in Abuja, he said, “Parastatals and I do know the hazards of life threatening for the ordinary person, but I am aware that we are coming from a background of a distorted process of recruitment into the Nigeria Immigration Service where it was alleged that the process was compromised.
“What we have decided to do is to attempt a new police design that is employed by the Nigeria Police Force, and employed by the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Army in processing applications for recruitment into the service.”
Moro tasked the committee on the need to take be alive to their responsibilities as it is no longer business as usual.
Said he, “I told you on assumption of duty here that it is no longer going to be business as usual, you either prepare to work and ship in or you prepare not to work and ship out”.

Captain America' Trailer: Steve Rogers, Frustrated Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Chris Evans and Samuel L. Jackson in "Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier"- 2014
World War II and the threat of HYDRA seem like simple challenges compared to the morally compromised modern world on display in the first trailer for "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," next spring's Marvel movie that puts the red, white, and blue hero front and center.
Except the red, white, and blue has faded a bit — not just in Cap's sleeker, sexier and inevitably darker costume but in the America he has sworn to protect, one where "disorder and war" is just one step away. Back in WWII, there were the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys'; today, the defenders of the country, particularly the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., seem to follow a more complicated and perhaps corrupt code of ethics, one enforced by Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford, perhaps playing an upgraded variation on his "Spy Game" character).
"To build a better world sometimes means tearing the old one down ... and that makes enemies," says Pierce to the troubled Steve Rogers, who now officially joins the ever-growing ranks of haunted and deeply conflicted superheroes in this entry.

Robert Redford
What's more sinister is Rogers clashing with his superior officer, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Fury's got the crazy eye (emphasis on just the one eye) as he aims his trademark Sam Jackson glare in Cap's direction, delivering pop comic book philosophy such as "S.H.I.E.L.D. protects the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be" as if it were a grave threat. Later, we hear Fury warn Cap, "You need to keep both eyes open" (haha), hinting that the S.H.I.E.L.D. bigwig might actually be something of an antagonist in this one — and one who gets seriously hurt as the vehicle he's driving gets blown onto its back later on.
Samuel L. Jackson
The trailer's not all doom and gloom, though: This is a Marvel movie, after all, and it's the sense of humor in the face of danger that often makes these comic book adventures even more thrilling. Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is in the background for most of the trailer, though she does open it with some witty Joss Whedon-ish banter about dating, with Cap claiming his Saturday night is open because "all the members of my barbershop quartet are dead."

Scarlet Johannson
Cap also gets a particularly badass moment when he takes out an elevator full of what appear to be a bunch of S.H.I.E.L.D. suits in about two seconds flat.

However, the real fan service happens in the last 30 seconds of the trailer, where we get a look at the film's main heavy, the Winter Soldier. The villain's identity (he's Cap's old war buddy Bucky Barnes) isn't revealed, nor does he even speak — all that's needed to show that this guy is going to be a major problem is his ability to grab Cap's shield with his bare hand after it's thrown at his head. For now, the Winter Soldier comes across as a more lithe and athletic Bane from "The Dark Knight Rises" — a masked force of nature, though one who can run and leap a bit more than his burlier Gotham counterpart.
Winter Soldier
And what's a big tentpole movie without some giant flying object engaging in a crash-landing? We saw it this summer in "Star Trek Into Darkness"; here we see what looks like a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier taking a fiery nosedive.
And yeah, we get to see Falcon (Anthony Mackie) fly. It's now no wonder why Mackie was geeking out about his role so much at the "Captain America" press conference at this summer's San Diego Comic-Con — it's a pretty cool sight.
Anthony Mackie
Ultimately it's great to see Steve Rogers in a dark, serious-minded political thriller that questions his own alter-ego identity and asks what, indeed, is a 'Captain America' of the 21st century. However Rogers comes to terms with this, it makes for a huge task and great responsibility: "You've shaped a century — I need you to do it one more time," says Pierce. It's not every S.H.I.E.L.D. operative who gets an assignment like that.
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" opens April 4, 2014.

Andy Lopez was shot dead by a Santa Rosa police officer

Dozens of people marched through the Santa Rosa neighborhood where a 13 year old boy was shot and killed by one of two sheriff’s deputies, after the deputies mistakenly thought the toy rifle was a real assault weapon.
Santa Rosa Police, who are handling the shooting investigation, say the deputies stopped their marked patrol car on Tuesday afternoon at 3:14 and told Andy Lopez twice to put down the gun.
Police say Lopez had his back to the deputies, who didn’t realize he was so young.
Instead, they say, Lopez turned with the barrel of the gun pointing toward them.
Police say the deputies feared for their lives and one of them opened fire.
“The deputy then fired several rounds from his service weapon at the subject,” said Lt. Paul Henry, “striking him at least one time.  The subject immediately fell to the ground.”
But one neighbor said he saw something different.
Ethan Oliver says he lives across the street and came outside after he heard two gun shots.
He says by that time Lopez was already on the ground.
“Then the cops went at it again and unloaded like 6 to 7 shots,” said Oliver.
When asked if he meant that the deputy shot Lopez while he was on the ground, Oliver said, “Yeah. Exactly what I saw.”
Authorities haven’t responded to that statement.
During a Wednesday afternoon news conference police displayed a real assault weapon and the “air soft” carried by the teen to demonstrate how difficult it is to tell them apart.
But one neighbor said police should know the difference.
“They kinda look the same,” said Christina Avila, “but at the same time if you’re law enforcement your job is to know what’s real and what’s fake.”
Greg Kestel said he used to work in the neighborhood, and said the teen wasn’t doing anything that a teen in any other part of the county wouldn’t be doing.
“If this is like anywhere else in rural Sonoma County and a kid with a pellet gun, they wouldn’t have done nothing to him,” said Kestel. “But this urban area they just blast the kid.”
Maritza Gallardo, 12, said she simply misses seeing her 13 year old cousin.
“It did hurt. It hurts a lot that he’s gone,” said Gallardo.
The Santa Rosa and Petaluma police departments were joining with the District Attorney’s office in the investigation of the shooting while the two deputies were on administrative leave.

How Twitter Will Look In 10 Years (PHOTO)

howtwitterwilllook One day, a user of Twitter decided to do something no else had tried before. It was November 2006, eight months after Twitter’s launch. At the time, almost all people on “micro-blogging” website were broadcasting their tweets to anybody and everybody.
Instead, Robert S Anderson directed his tweet at one person, by using his keyboard’s “at” symbol. He typed: “@buzz you broke your thumb and you’re still twittering?”
Hardly profound, but it was a moment of clarity. While Twitter’s founders had created a service that allowed people to type, search and follow other users, it was unclear how it would actually be used.
Anderson’s tweet provided the first of several answers. Among other things, Twitter was a messaging service, within which replying to and addressing others was a key feature. It was a vehicle for conversation.
Today, seven years on from its launch, Twitter is poised to debut on the stock market. With shares likely to begin trading in November, current talk is all about valuations, revenues and losses.
More intriguing, though, is a larger question: what does the future hold for a medium that has helped define the digital etiquettes of the last half-decade?
Assuming it endures, what might Twitter look like a decade from now?

The Chairman, Committee of Vice Chancellors and Registrars of Private Universities (CVRPU), Adebayo Adeyemi, announced this during the press conference, which took place on Wednesday.
Private universities used to be accused of taking advantage of the ongoing strike, but Mr. Mr. Adeyemi dismissed these insinuations stating the following:
“The development is a national embarrassment which nobody is proud of.”
According to his words, the decision is not connected with the recent threat by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to shut down private universities because of the crisis.
Mr. Adeyemi claimed that his group was already taking some covert measures.
He also expressed optimism that the crisis will be soon overcome.
The chairman pointed out the importance of finding an agreement and conducting constant dialogue to avoid future crisi.
Mr. Adeyemi, who is the Vice Chancellor, Bells University, Ota, Ogun, announced that the 5th convocation ceremony of the institution would hold between November 1 and 2, at the school premises.
He disclosed that a total of 207 students would be graduating with 14 of them passing out with first class honours.

Prophet Caught Fondling Woman’s Private Part, Fakes Death

A prophet caught on Sunday afternoon fondling a protesting woman’s private parts in the middle of the bush along Plumtree road, feigned death to save himself from the wrath of assailants.

sexual_assaultAccording to one of the assailants, Ability Ngwenya, while taking to short-cut to a supermarket alongside his friends, they saw the 44-year-old prophet, Trevor “White” Shumba praying for 28-year-old Beatrice Nkala while fondling her br**sts.
“We were shocked to see such a thing happening and it angered us to think this is what happens to our wives when they go to these prophets for intercession. We stopped for a while to see what would happen next. That is when the woman was startled over what the so-called man of God was doing to her and started protesting,” he said.
Despite the woman’s protest, the prophet continued fondling her forcefully, so he and his friends rushed to save her.
They battered the man until he pretended to be dead. When the prophet heard they were planning to take him to the police station, he quickly got up and tried to escape but he was caught.
Ngwenya said they dragged the prophet to the police where he was arrested and after a stubborn denial of any offence, he admitted to have physically abused Nkala and other women as well.
The victim, Nkala told the police that she did not expect that from Shumba as he was a man of God.
“I have always respected Shumba as my prophet and I never expected he would act that way. He has disgraced our church name and I refuse to be a victim because I am a Christian woman. My body is God’s temple,” Nkala said, adding that if not for Ngwenya and his friends, only God knows what could have happened.
The police said the matter will be dealt with by the court of law as cases of women abuse and r*pe are on the rise.

Mary J Blige And Tiwa Savage’s Reunion

Y’all know that Tiwa Savage used to be a backup singer for Mary J Blige?
Tiwa received high praise from the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul during her recent performance at the Sisters with Soul concert in Lagos last September. Mary J Blige stopped mid-way through her performance to acknowledge Tiwa’s presence in the audience then recounted the tale of how they met and worked together, before inviting the “Eminado” singer onstage to join her. The reunion of the talented songbirds was one of the highlights of the successful concert…

Messy Break-ups, Wizkid and Ice Prince’s Mistake

This is a rather personal piece.

It should be obvious (difficult to think otherwise) that Ice Prince’s tweets days ago were shots at former labelmates, Brymo and maybe his long time producer, Jesse Jagz (other ‘porting’ acts included, of course)? Like the popular rap line goes ‘money change niggas,’ How do you explain the once (still) humble rapper who never wasted time to give a shoutout to his comrades, take a shot at artistes leaving labels after one of the comrades left over what is believed to be ‘creative differences’ (maybe not solely but he definitely was not happy with how things that related to his career were being handled) or it is just ill-thought for Ice Prince to have done it on Twitter at this time.

P.S: Jesse Jagz takes some, if not all the credit for producing ‘Oleku,’ the singular track that changed Ice Prince’s c-list rhymer status into whatever it is now. Please, understand that I think Ice Prince is an amazing recording artiste. This write up is on his action (tweets) and the several unprofessional act by talents and record labels.

Let me clearly state I frown at artist waking up and going to the press to terminate contracts instead of discussing this with the labels. Here’s my theory and Interestingly, the label executives who have put their hard-earned money and ran labels in this industry that is without structure (using Ice Prince’s words from the tweet) more as a family, project have succeeded more — cue in Mo’hits, EME. Which brings to mind Wizkid’s situation earlier in the year which most of us have tagged the smartest move by a Nigerian talent this decade. On a lighter note, Don’t be stunned if Tecno launches a Magna Carta-type app and deal with Wizkid for his upcoming album.

In a compound sentence, Wizkid gave the blueprint on how successful acts can move to the next level and stay loyal to whatever or whoever made them successful in an industry with almost no structure. However, I know that someday he’d have to part ways but being in his early twenties and desiring a career to run another decade and beyond, staying a bit longer with a team that took you there, works and just re-negotiate your contract terms is the safest, smartest thing to do.

Let’s speculate again (just to be safe), Ice Prince was not talking to Jesse but Brymo couldn’t have ‘escaped’ it. We know the well-told story of Chocolate city doubting the potential of the ‘Oleku’ song as a single and Ice Prince having to be adamant, almost pushing it himself at first (if you don’t know now you know – in M.I.’s Chairman voice) which might have given the rapper the reason to tweet his thoughts on the subject. It is his twitter account might be the argument — well, white whales, brilliant! This is my opinion piece too! On a serious note, If his tweets were about being loyal, is it not ironic that he should rather have made an effort at resolving the issues between Brymo and the label since none of his singles scored as a hit until ‘oleku,’ if not taking Brymo’s side? I’m thinking out loud here as he basically took sides, a blind one. Brymo’s career was on a stand still, a new talent requires more visibility over money (if not both) – who masterminded the Spinlet deal for his debut? At most, he could have had two versions of the ‘Son of a kapenta’ album. The album jacket should be on every street in Lagos, Ibadan and every city in Southern Nigeria, half of those that are fans don’t use Spinlet, would have assumed anybody would know that.

There’s nothing against having an opinion or tweeting it, the most celebrated / artistic people steady do but a certain level of success carries the burden of sharing thoughts on business, ‘one-time’ colleagues and related out on public domain to the minimum. In my stint as AnR with Questionmark and some other acts, labels bring contract that eventually an artiste would require patience from the beyond to take the BS until his contract is done.

On another note, An artist should have a good career even if he doesn’t make A-list, I stand by this belief.

Also, I do believe in an inside saying credited to 2face that, ‘one person own must spoil for another person own to better’ (just like death and birth) but again, it doesn’t have to be messy. It happened at Questionmark, Kennis (with Kelly Hansome and others), Storm and we still had messy recent (ongoing) splits from Chocolate city and SQN.

Away from Ice Prince’s tweet and on a way forward? Since we can’t get prompt court hearing and resolve, the practical attempt at solution is contracts of reasonable durations with exit clause (of course seamless renewal if going is good), proper enlightenment and an arm at PMAN (which i’m hoping the interim president Kevin Luciano would having on his plate) be set up to enlighten, deal with this issues when label and artiste ‘break-ups’ arise.
