A man trying to defect to North Korea was shot and killed after troops fired
“hundreds” of rounds as he attempted to swim across the border.
Nam Yong-Ho, a 47-year-old South Korean man, is believed to have been attempting to seek political asylum in the pariah state.
In what is being described as a “highly unusual incident” Brigadier General Cho Jong-Sul defended the border guards’ actions, saying they had followed the correct protocol.
The general said soldiers manning a nearby guard post had repeatedly shouted warnings at Nam to turn back but he ignored them.
